USD Weakness Supports Precious Metals and Nasdaq, While WTI Crude Oil Posts a Fifth Straight Decline

Market Themes

The most notable development on September 22 was the divergence between rate-sensitive assets and crude oil. Spot gold closed at 4,358.25 (+0.34%), silver at 67.068 (+1.64%), and the Nasdaq at 30,748.3 (+0.78%) for a fourth consecutive gain; WTI crude oil closed at 93.729 (-2.39%), marking its fifth straight daily decline. Broad USD weakness reduced the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as gold, providing a common backdrop for precious metals and growth stocks; the decline in crude oil, however, was more concentrated on its own supply-demand and inventory expectations and was driven by a different set of factors.

Daily closes: spot gold 4,358.25 (+0.34%), silver 67.068 (+1.64%), Nasdaq 30,748.3 (+0.78%), GBP/USD 1.33439 (-0.16%), and WTI crude oil 93.729 (-2.39%).

Spot Gold (XAUUSD)

Spot gold closed at 4,358.25 on September 22, up 0.34% from the previous close of 4,343.51. After starting around 4,330 during the early Asian session, gold dipped to 4,291.51 during the European session before recovering in the U.S. session and reaching an intraday high of 4,371.09. It closed at 4,358.25, forming an intraday recovery from the lows. Broad USD weakness reduced the opportunity cost of holding gold and provided the main backdrop for the recovery from the lows; however, the close remained below MA20 (4,390.96), indicating that the medium-term structure has not yet strengthened. MA5 (4,336.87) and MA10 (4,334.04) remained below price, giving the short-term structure a relatively stronger bias.

From a policy-transmission perspective, if upcoming economic data strengthens expectations for a more dovish path for the Federal Reserve policy rate, lower real yields, assuming inflation expectations remain unchanged, would further reduce the holding cost of gold and provide support for prices. Conversely, stronger-than-expected data could reverse this transmission mechanism. Going forward, watch whether gold can close above MA20 (4,390.96) to confirm a stronger medium-term structure, with the 4,300 round-number level as downside support.

XAGUSD

Silver closed at 67.068 on September 22, up 1.64% from the previous close of 65.987, significantly outperforming gold. During the European session, silver fell to an intraday low of 64.556 before stabilizing. It then climbed to 67.540 during U.S. trading, breaking above and holding the 67 level.

Both short-term moving averages, MA5 (65.498) and MA20 (65.711), remained below the price, indicating a stronger structure than gold. The H4 price path shows that silver continued to recover from the European-session low of 64.556, accelerating higher during U.S. trading to reach 67.540 before closing at 67.068. The session therefore formed a dip-and-recovery pattern.

Silver’s larger gain was partly supported by the same broad USD weakness that benefited gold, while also reflecting additional upside sensitivity arising from its industrial characteristics and supply-demand expectations.

Going forward, watch whether silver can continue to hold above 67, with resistance at 68.315 (10-day high) and support at the 65.000 psychological level.

GBPUSD

GBP/USD closed at 1.33439 on September 22, down 0.16% from the previous close of 1.33654, marking its second consecutive daily decline.

The pair initially climbed to 1.33865 during the Asian session before retreating. During U.S. trading, it fell to 1.33208, setting a new recent low, before recovering modestly from the low to close at 1.33439.

The short-term moving averages MA5 (1.33684), MA10 (1.34399), and MA20 (1.34891) all remained above the price, indicating a weak structure.

Despite broad USD weakness, GBP/USD still closed lower, suggesting that sterling faced additional pressure of its own.

Going forward, watch whether the 1.33208 low can hold, with resistance at MA5 (1.33684).

NAS100

The Nasdaq closed at 30,748.3 on September 22, up 0.78% from the previous close of 30,509.8, marking its fourth consecutive daily gain.

During the European session, the index fell to 30,417.7 before stabilizing. It then climbed during U.S. trading to reach 30,812.2, setting a new recent high. The 30,500 psychological level was briefly lost intraday before being reclaimed.

The H1 price path shows the Nasdaq recovering steadily from the European-session low of 30,417.7, reaching an intraday high of 30,812.2 during U.S. trading before closing at 30,748.3.

The Nasdaq’s continued strength was consistent with the backdrop of a weaker USD, as interest-rate-sensitive growth stocks often receive relative support when the USD weakens.

Going forward, watch the 31,000 psychological level as resistance, with support at 30,500.

U.S. Crude Oil (WTI / Trading Code: USOIL)

WTI crude oil closed at 93.729 on September 22, down 2.39% from the previous close of 96.024, extending its fifth consecutive daily decline.

During the European session, crude initially climbed to 97.719 before turning lower. It continued to decline during U.S. trading, reaching 92.613. The 94 and 95 psychological levels were successively broken, while the 93 level was briefly lost intraday before being reclaimed.

The short-term moving averages MA5 (98.611) and MA10 (100.154) both remained above the price, indicating a clearly weak structure.

The H1 price path shows crude oil declining steadily from the European-session high of 97.719, reaching a low of 92.613 during U.S. trading before recovering modestly to close at 93.729.

The decline in crude oil contrasted sharply with the strength in precious metals and equity indices, with its own supply-demand and inventory expectations remaining the dominant factors. The market is closely watching changes in U.S. EIA crude oil inventories. If inventories increase by more than expected, this could place further pressure on oil prices.

Going forward, watch whether WTI crude oil can reclaim MA20 (94.569) to ease the current weakness, with downside support at 91.767 (10-day low).

What to Watch Going Forward

For gold, watch whether it can close above MA20 (4,390.96), with the 4,300 psychological level on the downside. For silver, watch whether the 67 level can continue to hold, with resistance at 68.315 (10-day high). For the Nasdaq, monitor resistance at the 31,000 psychological level and support at 30,500. For GBP/USD, watch whether the 1.33208 low can hold, with resistance at MA5 (1.33684). For WTI crude oil, watch whether it can reclaim MA20 (94.569), with downside support at 91.767 (10-day low).
