U.S. Stocks Break Above Key Levels on Higher Volume; WTI Crude Oil Plunges for a Fourth Straight Day

Market Themes

The most notable development on September 21 was the sharp divergence between U.S. equities and crude oil, with markedly different magnitudes of movement. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 both broke above major round-number levels and reached fresh recent highs, while WTI crude oil fell for a fourth consecutive trading day, dropping nearly 4% after rising during the Asian session before declining in the U.S. session. Although the two markets moved in opposite directions on the same day, their drivers were different and should not be attributed to a single risk-appetite narrative. Spot gold retreated after an intraday rise, while GBPUSD dipped, more closely reflecting relative pressure from the dollar and interest-rate environment and following a different logic from the sharp decline in crude oil.

The Nasdaq rose 2.75% to break above 30,500, while the S&P 500 gained 1.34% to break above 7,700. WTI crude oil fell 3.99% to 96.024, marking its fourth consecutive decline. Spot gold fell 0.79% and lost the 4,350 level, while GBPUSD declined 0.21% and closed near the day’s low.

WTI Crude Oil (USOIL)

WTI crude oil (USOIL) closed at 96.024 on September 21, down 3.99% from the previous close of 100.012, marking its fourth consecutive daily decline. After rising to 101.038 during the Asian session, the price weakened and fell to 95.243 during the U.S. session, with the daily range expanding significantly. The 99, 98, and 97 round-number levels were breached successively. The 96 level was briefly broken intraday before being reclaimed, with the price closing back above 96. By session, the Asian session contributed the largest selling pressure, while the U.S. session saw a second decline and the European session had a limited impact.

From a moving-average perspective, WTI opened above the MA10 at 100.226 but closed below it, signaling clear short-term weakness. However, the close remained above the MA20 at 93.961, meaning the medium-term structure has not yet broken down. The 100.966–101.038 area, represented by the 5-day MA and intraday high, is the short-term dividing line and would need to be reclaimed on a closing basis before a stabilization signal emerges. The 93.000 round-number level is the key medium-term support, with a closing break below it being the confirmation threshold.

After four consecutive daily declines, a short-term oversold recovery is possible, but whether a rebound can develop will depend on whether the price can reclaim the MA10.

NAS100

The Nasdaq (NAS100) closed at 30,509.8 on September 21, up 2.75% from the previous close of 29,694.6, marking its third consecutive daily gain. The index dipped to 29,648.3 during the Asian session before stabilizing and rising to 30,604.1 during the U.S. session. It successively broke above the 30,000 and 30,500 round-number levels and closed above both.

The 30,604.1 level is also the high across the 10-day, 20-day, and 60-day windows, placing the Nasdaq in its initial confirmation zone following the breakout. Short- and medium-term moving averages, including the MA5 at approximately 29,527.9 and MA20 at approximately 29,415.2, remain below price, indicating a stronger technical structure. The 31,000 round-number level is the next level to watch and would require a closing break above it to confirm further upside space. The 30,000 major round-number level becomes short-term support, with a closing break below it as the confirmation threshold. Breakout confirmation typically requires the index to remain above the level in subsequent sessions; a rapid decline below 30,500 would cast doubt on the validity of the breakout.

S&P 500 (SP500)

The S&P 500 (SP500) closed at 7,769.3 on September 21, up 1.34% from the previous close of 7,666.2, also marking its third consecutive daily gain. After dipping to 7,657.6 during the Asian session, the index stabilized and climbed to 7,788.0 during the U.S. session, breaking above and holding the 7,700 round-number level. It moved in the same direction as the Nasdaq but with a more moderate gain, reflecting differences in index weighting.

The 7,824.5 level, the 60-day high, is approximately 0.7% above the close and represents the main resistance before a further breakout. The 7,700 round-number level becomes short-term support, with a closing break below it as the confirmation threshold. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both closed higher, indicating broad market strength in the same direction; however, market breadth still requires confirmation from sector performance or the number of advancing and declining stocks.

Spot Gold (XAUUSD)

Spot gold (XAUUSD) closed at 4,343.51 on September 21, down 0.79% from the previous close of 4,378.30. Gold rose to 4,383.34 during the Asian session before retreating and fell to 4,322.69 during the U.S. session, breaking below the 4,350 round-number level intraday. The close remained above the MA5 at 4,323.8 and MA10 at 4,333.6, but below the MA20 at 4,406.0, leaving the short-term structure intact while upside pressure remains evident.

Against a backdrop of improving risk appetite in U.S. equities, gold’s relative appeal as a non-yielding asset came under pressure. This follows a different logic from the sharp decline in crude oil. The 4,406 area, corresponding to the MA20, is the key medium-term resistance and would need to be reclaimed on a closing basis before a stronger technical structure can be considered. The intraday low of 4,322.69 is the key short-term support level. Gold and crude oil both weakened on the day, but their drivers were different and should not simply be attributed to the same cause.

GBPUSD

GBPUSD closed at 1.33654 on September 21, down 0.21% from the previous close of 1.33931. After rising to 1.33997 during the European session, the pair retreated and fell to 1.33643 during the U.S. session, closing near the day’s low and approaching the 10-day low of 1.33349. Short-term momentum remained weak, but the pair has not yet broken below the recent range floor. The 1.33349 level is the recent low and key support, with a closing break below it required for confirmation. The 1.33997 intraday high represents the first resistance level for a rebound.

Market Outlook

Key areas to watch include whether WTI crude oil can close back above the MA10 at 100.226 to confirm short-term stabilization, and whether the Nasdaq can maintain its position above 30,500. For gold, attention remains on the 4,406 MA20 and the 4,322.69 intraday low. For GBPUSD, the focus is on whether the recent low of 1.33349 is broken on a closing basis.
